Early original pumping systems are still in operation with a very low yearly maintenance cost and input. At a test site, a solar pump was installed along side a windmill for reference. Over a 15 year period, the solar pump required minor replacements such as pump seals, belts and motor brushes.

In the same time the wind mill required 4 columns, pump seals, was rebuilt once and was severely damaged twice by wind gusts twice. On the second occasion it was removed from service.

Surface pumping from dams/soaks or wells with a maximum suction of 4 meters is the cheapest source of water. Typically, a choice of helical rotor or piston pump is used.

Drawing water from bores or wells is also possible. Today, stainless steel brushless DC motor pumps dominate the market given their simplicity of installation, minimal maintenance requirements and high efficiency.
